Google Alerts can help drive traffic to your website or blog

July 11, 2009 By: Duane Coleman Category: Social Media Marketing

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of commenting on third party blogs and other social media sites.  By sharing your expertise with others, you can benefit by driving traffic to your website, blog or other Internet properties.

But how do you find these third party sites to comment on?  Industry association sites, partner websites and industry news sites are a natural, but did you know that Google offers a service that notifies you when someone writes about an area that may be important to your business.  It’s called Google Alerts.

Google Alerts enables you to register for the keyword phrases or search terms that you  feel are important.  Google will then notify you via e-mail when someone writes about that topic.  This can be a news piece, blog comment or other Internet related post.

Let’s say your company has developed a product that helps businesses to reduce energy related costs.  You can enter energy reduction related keywords into Google Alerts and they will e-mail you postings related to the search terms you entered on a daily or weekly basis.

You can then click on these postings and share your expertise as appropriate.  People with similar interests will read your comments and you build credibility in the process.

And be sure to include your website address, blog URL or other Internet address when you comment as interested individual will then click the link to find out more about you…..and your site traffic increases accordingly.  You’ll want to add anchor text into your blog comments, but that’s a topic for another day.

Google alerts is also a great tool for monitoring your competitors as you’ll receive updates on their activities and announcements.  All you have to do is to enter your competitors name into the “search terms” field.

You can register for Google Alerts at the following link:

Give it a shot.  I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
