SEO/Website Competitive Assessment: A Tool That Can Help You Know Where You Stand

September 12, 2009 By: Duane Coleman Category: SEO - Search Engine Optimization

We  recently completed a website competitive assessment for a website developer and her client.  The client had been working with an SEO firm for a couple of years and wanted to determine what was being done and what could be done to improve the effectiveness of his SEO effort.  The site had generated very few leads.

Unfortunately, there had been minimal communication with the SEO firm and the client felt out in the dark.  All he wanted to do was to insure that his dollars were being spent wisely and he was looking for a mutually beneficial relationship.

We took a look at the performance of a number of his key competitors and their website strategies and found that they were ranking for certain keyword phrases.  We also found that there were keywords that were important to his business that had not been optimized for.  Keywords research and analysis had not been completed, which was part of the issue.

We also discovered that the client was paying for link building on a monthly basis.  Our reporting revealed that the site showed “0″ inbound links for Google, which was cause for concern.  We took a look  at a number of other factors as well.

The SEO firm that he was using had done some things right, yet there was still opportunity.

I believe that this situation would not have escalated had the firm been willing to listen to the clients needs and provide the response and support that he required.  No organization is perfect, yet the client felt neglected.

This situation was insightful as there are probably dozens of local business owners who are in the same situation and may not have known to seek a third party assessment.

If you are concerned about the effectiveness of your SEO, PPC or other Internet Marketing efforts, maybe its time to consider hiring a reputable third party to take a look.  You’ll know where you stand and it may be one of the best small investments that can make.
