What Is Link Building and Why Is It So Important?
Link building has been around almost as long as the concept of (SEO) search engine optimization. And many of the earliest practitioners of search engine optimization only used link-building to get their websites or their client’s websites to the top of the targeted search engine results page.
What is Link Building?
Link building is a process in which you systematically pursue quality, one-way, back-links to your website from other websites. The way I describe this to clients is that the Internet is just one big popularity contest. The more votes (links to your website) you get, the more value the search engines assign your website. The more value, the higher the search engine ranking. There are other factors, of course.
Unfortunately, as with most things, it’s not that simple. Unlike a straight “one person equals one vote” system, in the search engine’s algorithms, the quality of the link is very important.
Good links versus bad links
In other words, if you have a link from a website that has a low Google Page Rank, low Alexa Rank, and isn’t related to the subject matter of your website, the link may be of little worth.
It’s important to have relevant links pointing to your website from high-quality websites. High quality as in high Google Page Rank, high Alexa Rank and plenty of content on the website. It’s best if the site has similar or the same keyword phrases.
What Google Loves
Google also loves links from authority sites such as DMOZ or .org or .gov websites. These are often very difficult to obtain and require that your website be of the highest standards. If the site has limited quality content or if the site is packed with sales content, the value of the link may be minimal.
In other words, it helps to have great content on your website like blog posts, articles and downloadable white papers to attract those kinds of high-quality links.
Quality sites have a way of attracting quality links, which can make your link building efforts a lot easier.
